My Story

After years as a freelance costume maker for film, TV, and theatre — working from historical references and design briefs — I transitioned into clay five years ago, drawn by the challenge of a completely new medium.

I chose Parian instinctively. Its rapid drying, ivory tone, and subtle satin surface felt right from the beginning — a material with its own history, rooted in the great English factories of Minton and Copeland, and one that rewards patience and precision.

My work begins with research. I am drawn to historical figures, mythology, and the stories that illuminate human vulnerability and strength. Every piece is built on meticulous handwork — each sprig, fold, and detail individually crafted before the work is assembled in stages, partially at greenware and completed after firing. Parian demands this patience; the material is cleaned, sanded, and fired.

Alongside this, I have been developing a body of work in cold bronze — forms cast in resin and worked by hand through successive layers of bronze and metal powders, each piece developing its own patina through chemical finishing. This work shares the same interest in historical subject matter and antiquity, whilst arriving at something altogether different in weight, warmth, and surface.

I am a member of the Surrey Sculpture Society, and in 2024 two of my figures were selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
